Welcome to TCC's Hampton Roads Maritime Training Program. This is one of the few programs in the region offering U.S. Coast Guard-approved courses for training and certification in many aspects of seamanship.

OUPV license program

The HRMTP offers courses in:

Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV/Six Pack) License
This course meets the Coast Guard requirement that certain individuals must successfully complete to obtain an OUPV License.  If you satisfactorily complete this course you will be issued a certificate to present to the Coast Guard.  This certificate satisfies the examination portion of the Coast Guard requirements for an OUPV license.  The Coast Guard has other requirements that you will have to submit prior to receiving your license; such as a physical exam, at least 360 days experience on the water, etc.  OUPV is commonly called a six-pack or charter captain’s license.  This Coast Guard license is required by those operating uninspected vessels that carry no more than six passengers for hire.

Offshore Safety & Survival for Non-mariners
This course teaches basic offshore safety and survival techniques for anyone who works on the water in any size vessel. Course includes in-class lecture as well as pool lessons for practical, hands-on techniques.

ABYC Marine Systems Certification 
ABYC certification is a recognized standard of achievement in the marine industry and is sought by many employers.The ABYC Marine Systems certification class includes key information from 21 different ABYC Standards as they apply to boat component selection and installation.

Surface Preparation and Coatings: Huntington Ingles
TCC will be hosting a Marine Coatings Course at the Center for Workforce Solutions May 26 - June 6 in coordination with Virginia Ship Repair Association. This course is an introduction to ship paint environments and work skills. Find out more about the class on the VSRA website

Master Not More Than 100 Gross Tons License
This course meets the US Coast Guard requirements to issue a 100 Gross Ton Master’s License.  This license is required by those operating inspected vessels of 100 GT or less.  Upon completion of our course you will receive a HRMTC at TCC certificate to present to the Coast Guard along with the other requirements to obtain your license.

Upgrade OUPV to Master Not More Than 100 Gross Tons
This course is available for those who may already have their OUPV license and wish to upgrade to 100 GT Master’s license.  This course follows each OUPV course and you must meet the same requirements as those receiving their original 100 GT license.

Assistance Towing
This course meets Coast Guard requirements to obtain a towing endorsement on your license.  It is a one-day (6-hour) course that is offered periodically throughout the year.

Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) 
This 80-hour, two-week certification course is for Licensed Deck or Radio Officers wishing to obtain their STCW GMDSS certification and obtain a GMDSS FCC License. TCC is a USCG-approved facility. For details see the GMDSS Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).

Radar Observer Courses
These courses meet the Coast Guard requirement that certain individuals must successfully complete a Coast Guard approved radar observer training course in order to receive an endorsement as Radar Observer. We have both original and renewal courses. Upon successful completion of our course you will be issued a certificate which you simply present to the Coast Guard who will then place a radar observer endorsement on your license. We offer day classes.

Automatic Radar Plotting Aids (ARPA)
This 5-day course is STCW approved and teaches the basics of ARPA including the principle types of ARPA systems, the possible risks of over-reliance on ARPA and setting up and maintaining ARPA displays. The curriculum consists of classroom instruction, ARPA manufacturer instructional videotapes and student hands on training on both our Raytheon RAYCAS V and Racal-Decca 1690 ARPA's. This course also qualifies you to renew your radar observer endorsement.

Radar Observer Renewal Courses 
These courses meet the Coast Guard requirement that certain individuals must successfully complete a Coast Guard approved radar observer training course in order to receive an endorsement as Radar Observer. We have both original and renewal courses. Upon successful completion of our course you will be issued a certificate which you simply present to the Coast Guard who will then place a radar observer endorsement on your license. We offer a day and evening class. Renewals will be given Mondays during Radar and ARPA.

Flashing Light
This course meets the Coast Guard requirement that all individuals applying for either an original or upgraded deck license over 1600 gross tons on ocean or coastwise waters must pass a signaling examination (flashing light). Upon successful completion of our course you will be issued a certificate which you simply present to the Coast Guard to meet the flashing light requirement for your particular license. Is provided on as needed basis. We would need prior notice.

Martin Luther King day, Memorial day, 4th of July, Labor day, Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday and we will not have classes the last two weeks in December. Prices and schedules are subject to change so please call for up-to-date information and registration.
